Is Mormonism Christian?

Latter-day Saints believe that their church is Christian, and that they themselves are Christians in every sense of the word. Mormons certainly embrace the moral principles of the Bible as Christians do, but is it possible for a Christian faith to deny the basic doctrines that have characterized Christianity for two thousand years and still be viewed as Christian? Would it be appropriate for a non-Mormon to claim to be a "Latter-day Saint" when he or she does not hold to the distinctives of Mormonism? If a person does not accept Joseph Smith as a prophet of God, or the Book of Mormon as Holy Scripture, he really shouldn't claim to be a Mormon or a Latter-day Saint.

The same is true for members of the LDS Church. Even though they may be very nice people, we do not believe that they can be classified as Christian. Mormonism denies all Christian teachings concerning God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Plan of Salvation etc. Muslims "believe in Jesus", but they teach he was a prophet of a past dispensation, and that Mohammed is the prophet for the last days. Few would argue that Islam is a Christian faith, even though Jesus is included in their belief system. Other religions have a belief in Jesus too, but do not have the Biblical teaching that Christians base their faith in Christ upon.

Why do you send missionaries to the Mormons?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a religious organization known for its missionary zeal. Who hasn't at some time had two young Mormon men dressed in suits knock on your door, hoping to share their faith? Even though we admire the dedication of the Mormon people to live out their convictions, it is our firm belief that a message of reconciliation through Jesus Christ must be taken to their homes and families. The Mormon gospel is not the Christian gospel. The message of Mormonism is not the message of Christianity. The teachings of Mormonism are not in conformity to "the faith which was once for all given to the Saints." [Jude 3]
