Stone Arch Bridge

When the Mormons first arrived in the Nauvoo area they found much of the property to be a mosquito-infested swamp. Two channels were dug to drain the land, enabling much of the water to flow into the Mississippi. One of these drainage channels flows under the Stone Arch Bridge; the original road went over this bridge at the South entrance to the city.
